In Ayshu's Footsteps
By Thomas A. Kempis
Thomas A. Kempis is not related to Thomas a Kempis. |
It is a delicate task that confronts a publisher
when rare materials are presented to us,
such as a translation of a heretofore unpublished
apocryphal manuscript in Aramaic.
Is it our duty to wait until such a time as these
materials have been proven to be authentic?
Or is our responsibility to make these materials
available to the educated public as soon as possible?
In this case, we’re not sure whether
Thomas A. Kempis is, as he claims to be,
a mere translator… or whether he is the
author of this work…
We have opted to publish these materials,
together with a foreword cautioning the reader
that
the historicity of the documents is not guaranteed.
If they turn out to not be ancient in provenance,
the work may be better understood as a contemporary
appropriation of ancient (or timeless) concepts,
a piece of post-modern art rather than a translation
of an antique text.
